If there is one thing that everyone can agree on, it’s that first impressions are important! This still reigns true even when talking about the first impression of your home!

Whether you are a designer, decorator, contractor, or simply a homeowner you must agree that a striking front entry door is as crucial to the home’s first impression as a greeting is when meeting someone new!

The Entry Door can allow you to express your individual taste and style more than any other exterior feature of your home.

When you are thinking about replacing your entry door, do not be afraid to be bold and stand out from others in your neighborhood. As you are looking at the entry doors of the other homes around you, it is great to think about doing something unique that you haven’t seen before or don’t see often.

That is part of the beauty of customizing your entryway. As most of the homes in your area will likely have a somewhat similar build and layout design, the Front Entry Door is where you get to truly make a statement.

When thinking about what style of door you might want, let geometry and shapes work in your favour. If you have arched walkways through the house or an arched foyer, maybe go for arched doors to match, OR if you prefer a bit of contrast, then maybe go with all square for the door. It can basically all work together however you like, there are no set rules here.

If the front of your house is very wide, maybe try to get wide or large doors to go along with it. If you have a Spanish or Mediterranean style home, maybe doors with wrought iron and glass will fit you best.

Often the architects and designers get all of the credit for the overall look of homes, including the doors but some of our best entryways have been thought of and designed by the homeowners! People with everyday jobs and lives who aren’t constantly making these types of architectural decisions for thousands of other homes often come up with the best ideas of how to put things together in a personalized and unique way to match their own personality and lifestyles.

We’ve actually seen homeowners who essentially will go on to change design elements inside the home to match after retrofitting the front entry door because they love the style so much. An arched door can become the inspiration for them to add interior arches from room to room and to change all of the interior doors to have a similar look and feel.

Keeping the door proportional to the rest of the home is important. You can always incorporate door accessories such as speakeasy grills, hinge straps, and an endless amount of door handles and hardware to further accent your entryway. You can also set the door apart by staining or painting it a bold or distinctive color.

With so many things to choose from, from Fiberglass, decorative glass, custom wood, contemporary, rustic, classic, craftsman… The list and the options can sometimes feel overwhelming. So, if you are thinking about installing new doors, whether they are for new construction or replacements in your current home, we can help!

Thinking about installing the beautiful and popular Picture (fixed) window style in your home? First, take a look at some of the biggest pros and cons of this particular style before making your decision!

Pros

Insulation and Weatherproofing

Traditional picture windows are tightly sealed around all edges and are not able to be opened. This allows them to provide fewer gaps for air or water to leak in or out of your home. When it comes to energy efficiency, an insulated fixed window with Low-E coating, warm-edge spacers, and other energy-saving capabilities are almost unbeatable.

Lighting

Thanks to their structural simplicity, picture(fixed) windows can be customized to be larger than most other types of windows. This enables them to allow in an abundance of sunlight, limiting the need for artificial light indoors during the day!

Maintenance

Picture Windows are pretty easy to clean and maintain. Due to their simplicity, the cleaning process is very straightforward, because there are no moving components or hard-to-reach nooks and crannies to sanitize.

Cost

Being both convenient and cost-effective, fixed windows do not have mechanical parts that need to be replaced when they fail. Making them generally cost less than similarly-sized sliding or casement windows.

Cons

Ventilation

For many, the biggest point against this type of window is the lack of ventilation. If you live in a warm climate and depend heavily on ventilation to cool down your home, installing a picture window would not be the most efficient choice, unless you choose to install other more operable windows in the room.

Maintenance

Cleaning can be seen as both a pro and a con. Their lack of moving parts makes them easy to clean, but only from indoors. Cleaning a picture window from outside can be another story, especially if they are particularly large or installed on the upper floors.

Heat gain

While picture windows are generally very energy-efficient, the fact that they let in a lot of light may also mean unwanted solar heat gain. If you want to avoid heat gain issues but still enjoy the benefits of tightly-sealed fixed windows, pay attention to U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) values when you shop for your windows.

Cost

Another double-edged sword for these windows is cost. While picture windows do not have many parts that will need to be replaced, they will still suffer from wear and tear over time. And when this happens, you’ll have to replace the entire unit. Unlike, some other windows where you may be able to just replace specific parts that are failing.

Love your home but feel like the exterior is beginning to look a little dull and outdated? Don’t worry, there are some super easy fixes that DON’T involve having to move!

Not only are these examples great for updating your home simply for your own enjoyment, but they can actually help to increase the overall value of your home as well.

These 3 ways to refresh your exterior are as easy as calling up your favourite window and door company or even just a painter!

1. Replace your windows

This one may be self-explanatory but it can make a world of difference for the visual appeal of your home to replace your windows! Typically a homeowner will wait until the windows in the home are in desperate need of replacement, but it doesn’t have to be that way!

Maybe you want more light in your home, or a new shape and design for your windows. These of course can be done at any time to revive your home’s aesthetic appeal on both the inside and outside of your home.

2 . Give your home a paint job

Giving your home a new coat of paint can completely change and renew the visual appeal of your home. Over time the old paint on your home will start to wear down and even chip off, which can be a real eye sore. Whether it is because your current paint job is falling apart, or just because you’d like to shake things up with a new colour, painting your home can be an easy fix!

If your windows and doors are in good condition, you can even just change up the trimming paint to create a fresh new look for your home!

3. Install new doors

The final simple way to refresh your home’s exterior is of course to install new doors in your home! Maybe you want to upgrade from a single to a double door, or go from a fibreglass to a steel door, or vice versa! Perhaps your patio door is too small and not allowing enough light to enter your space. These can all be fixed by simply updating your doors.

Alternatively, if you still love the doors on your home but want to shake things up visually, combine this with our first tip and give your door a fresh new paint job to change things up!

Are you tired of seeing the same colour door on every home you pass? You want your home to be one of the few that actually stands out? Changing the colour of your exterior doors is one of the easiest ways to create an inviting feel for you and your  guests and to also burst the curb appeal of your home.

Before you choose a colour and start painting, there are a few things you may want to consider!

1. Make sure to choose a colour that compliments your home.

Pink might be your favourite colour, but it’s probably not a good choice of colour for a front door! You’ll want to pick a colour that compliments the rest of the tones, shades and overall style of your home’s exterior to create a holistic visual appeal. By deciding on a colour that matches with the wood or brick design on your home you will achieve that harmonious look! You can experiment with different colours by bringing home swatches of the colours you like to see which might make the most sense for your home.

2. Choose a colour that is durable and that will last on the exterior.

Choosing paint for the outside of your door will likely be more difficult than choosing a colour for the interior of your home. Natural light can change the overall appearance of the colour that you choose, because of this we usually recommend choosing a bolder colour! This will also help prevent the paint from fading as quickly as a light colour might when being exposed to the sunlight.

3. Choose the right kind of paint.

The type of paint you need will depend on the quality and model of your door. For example, we would not recommend using high gloss paint on an older, damaged door as the paint will likely sit in the cracks making the door’s imperfections very visible. Really take the time to look into different paint options in terms of types of finishes, as well as your door’s material before going ahead and painting. Now that you understand the things you need to know about choosing a colour for your door, here are some suggestions for timeless but bold colours.

Green

At first, you may be thinking that having a green exterior door may get lost in all of the natural greenery but actually, painting your front door green can bring out and accentuate the various shades of green that can be found in your landscaping. Your door and the greenery surrounding it will be separated by the exterior of your actual home itself, giving the overall appeal a variation of colours and textures while still coming together as a whole.

Navy Blue

With this particular blue tone, you can either have the rich and classic appeal or keep it fun and fresh based on the exact shade you choose. Navy blue pairs extremely well with our Canadian seasonal greenery. This colour is also excellent at creating a statement when decorated for any holiday (i.e., pumpkins for Halloween, wreath for Christmas etc,.).

Red

The combination of a neutral home exterior with a red accent door is often considered a classic choice! Although the thought of a red front door may seem overwhelming at first, try not to be afraid of it and remain open to the idea! Red is a popular current trend that not only draws in attention but will stay relevant and suit your home for years to come!

Black

Black is another classic and bold choice, suitable to make a statement on any size home. By adding a contrasting white trim you can make your door stand out even further. Although black is a classic colour when it comes to clothing, that does not necessarily mean it is the right choice for every home. Depending on the design features of the rest of your home it might end up looking a bit intimidating when you add a black door. This is a common outcome for homes that do not have a lot of natural light surrounding them.

Now that you know what to consider, and some popular choices for exterior door colours, you can make an informed and suitable decision for your home and lifestyle! After all, your front door is a huge part of your home’s first impression and can be an extension of your own unique style and personality. So make sure it’s something you love!
